"Empowerment. It’s my goal as a mentor. It’s my goal as a counselor. It’s my goal as a leader," explains Dr. Craig Brown. For decades, his passion for technology, programming and management have grown tremendously with time. It’s reflected by his work: with people in mind first, and technology coming in second. When it comes to improving technology and giving instruction, it’s about being understandable, approachable and non-intimidating. It’s the way he encourages other professionals, counsels some of his less tech-confident clients and leads organizations. Brown believes this approach of using less tech-speak and more people-first language is what has helped him throughout his two and a half decades within the industry.
Beginning with education, and realizing it is a non-stop process for everyone, technical players and beyond, Brown refuses to stop learning about the industry. Face it: things just aren’t the way they were 15 years ago. They aren’t the same as they were five years ago, either. Brown begins with his own focus of absorbing as much information as possible, as long as possible to remain on the forefront of changing technology, keeping up with the technical Joneses and, in turn, empowering his colleagues. Brown holds a BS in Computer Science as well as a Master's in Business and a Doctorate in Management Information Systems, and harnesses more than 20 certifications in technology.
Beyond education, Brown reminds himself that education can often serve in the shadows of experience. He established a professional career of service as the expert systems and database architect for major technical organizations including: Microsoft, SAP Business and Management Solutions, IBM Oracle and Oracle-PeopleSoft. Each role has built his repertoire in Enterprise Resource Planning, Decision Support and Relational Database Management Systems technologies.
With a background in business and information technology, a people-first, technology-second approach, Brown has been equipped to exceed the expected the duties and responsibilities of the role as the incoming National President of the largest organization of African-American technological professionals, the Black Data Processing Association (BDPA). As an effective communicator and motivator along with a commanding voice, he strives to lead in a way that doesn’t alienate the community of non-technological professionals (or new members of the arena) without frustrating more confident and experienced industry experts.
"So, my goal of empowerment is reflected by my work which is to increase diversity within STEM markets globally, and spread a people-first approach that encourages our youth to be confident, and less intimidated, by STEM curriculum and careers. After all; people are the reason for improved technology, and always will be," Brown says.
At present Dr. Brown serves as the Sr. Partner and CEO of STEM Resource Partners, an IT Staffing and Consulting Business. He also serves as the National Vice President for the non profit organization BDPA as well as Board of Directors Chairman for the non profit Carters Kids Foundation.
