Why you should consider custom phone numbers

In this day and age, most of us have mobile phone and use them as our primary means of communication with the world.
As we move across the country, I see an increasing number of people who choose to keep their 'original phone number' due to so many people having it. Old colleagues, good friends and even family. Not to mention all the saving and membership clubs that you used that old phone number for. However, the issue here is that everyone has that number and, that means you have no control over who contacts you when.
Years ago, we found ourselves in a new city settling the family again and I came across what I now can only call a brilliant stroke of luck.
What was this brilliant stroke of luck?
I created a google voice number to use as our home number. I have since created a skype number and a magic jack number. For $60/ year, I have 4 numbers to use for different purposes and can access them all from my cell when I desire to via apps these services provide free of charge.
This has another benefit. By using these numbers that are not attached to a specific device, even if I change my device, I still get the calls. In addition, my number cannot be location-traced by anyone who might have nefarious purposes.
So...what does this look like?
My google voice number is for all things home. It allows for the school to contact us, family, friends and even receives text messages. I even use it for all of the grocery stores and any retail, location asking me for my number.
My magic jack number is a local number that I use for business and professional contacts. It's what I put on my business cards and LinkedIn profile and websites.
My skype number is used for general communication to generic people who might become people I want to continue communicating with. I also use this phone for doctor offices.
The nice thing about this is that I can switch this around or set up these phones to forward these calls directly to my phone without using the apps or even make calls from my personal computer.
I suppose these services could be used nefariously but, for me, they are fantastic tools to help me keep my sanity. It is my hope that by sharing with you these ideas that you would find some benefit.

It's an AWESOME idea, Curtis ... I'm happy Melissa shared her approach as a good safety reminder...

As seriously as I can possibly say it, I wish many, many, MANY more female jobseekers in particular would consider this for their safety in this odd, odd world we find ourselves in...

Thanks, and #KeepSTRONG, STRONG LADY!
