Tracking Your Activity as a Business Owner

Like most of us, I once had a normal job working 9-5 (which on occasion turned into 8-7), slogging out my 40-50 hours a week for a wage which felt “underwhelming” on the 15th of each month when we got paid.

I decided that enough was enough and started my own company. The rest is history.

During that time, I hit one of most important roadblocks of my entrepreneurial career. I found myself working 60+ hours a week with very little freedom. After all, freedom is one the biggest reasons for starting your own business!

I remember my “tipping point” vividly.

My partner (now, luckily my wife) and I flew up to Brisbane for 3 days to watch the State of Origin game at Suncorp Stadium. It was a mini-reward for all the hard work we had put in for the first 6 months of the year.

Little did I realise, I came to find that my business ran me, not the other way around – as it should be!

I spent 95% of that trip on my laptop, putting out fires and working away in my own little bubble, as my partner looked on in disgust.

I was NOT free; I couldn’t even take 3 days off to enjoy myself.

I realized I needed to do something or I was better off just getting a job.

The moment I got back home, I got to work. But this time, it was a different kind of work.

For the next 30 days, I tracked every single business-related task and how much time it took out of my day.

I then set my self a goal of systematising 2 hours of that work each month.

This is something I educate my business coaching clients about today!

As time went on, my weekly time commitment to my business continued to decrease. However, my profits started to soar (go figure!).

Each year since then I have had a minimum of 120% growth in that company. I have systematised the business so that it nearly runs without me.

The true test was my honeymoon last year. I was gone for a month and managed to run that exact same business in less than an hour each week.

My passion now lies in helping other business owners tackle the very same challenge.

But to ensure I don’t get sucked in to the same trap, I only work with 10 clients at any one time.
