They Say It Is Failure To Thrive: What Can You Do?

Failure To Thrive is a label of lower than normal weight and height. Pediatricians identify this based on how your child matches a standardized growth chart or on changes in your child's growth advancement. If not improved this situation could affect the child's normal progress through the normal developmental stages.

Perhaps the pediatrician has told you that it is just a nutrition issue and has told you what to do to raise your child's level of nutrition. Perhaps you have to adjust your child's menu with coaching from a nutritionist. Perhaps the pediatrician prescribed a specific formula for your child.

Perhaps the pediatrician has found some precise medical syndrome which is interfering with your child's capability to develop. This could possibly consist of physical problems with the processes of taking in food and extracting the nutrients from it. It could possibly consist of a other medical situations such as kidney or heart disease, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, or even other ailments.

A rising number of medical practitioners have begun to understand Failure To Thrive as a syndrome related to Intolerances and Sensitivities. In other words the child is responding to some things around the child and these defending responses are impacting the child's growth.

These intolerances are not an allergic reaction. Allergies have an high speed reaction which could be as minor as itchy throat or coughing and could be as severe as anaphylactic shock.

These intolerances take a long time and repeated exposure to bring about responses. After continual exposure to a single factor to which a person has sensitivity, the reaction could be as slight as a little cough or light perspiration. When someone is responding to the compounding effects of many different environmental factors to which they are sensitive or intolerant all stacked together, the defensive responses could be quite severe. With multiple simultaneous exposures, this leads to responses which impact a person's behavior, emotions, and even health

Intolerances and Sensitivities And Failure To Thrive

In our experience, we have found that children and infants with Failure To Thrive are very sensitive. We find that they have this intolerance to many environmental factors which they breathe, touch, or eat every day (and often all day). With this continual exposure, they stay in a permanent state of defending responses.

For instance, we find it normal for Failure To Thrive children to be intolerant of the chemical components in the air fresheners, laundry soaps, dryer sheets, or other chemicals used in the house. When a child has these intolerances, they are continually touching or breathing residue from these products every day and all the time. This unending contact maintains them in a permanent state of defending responses.

Under this unending strain on their systems, their body has to shut down non-essential functions to conserve the resources to survive. For most of these very sensitive children, this means shutting down the circuits which control the developmental process. This is non-essential for immediate survival, so by shutting it down, the body has has access to more resources for survival, but this means the developmental process is stopped.
