Continued growth on Vernon Hills' to-do list

Continuing economic growth, an early incentive payoff and partnership with local agencies on various projects were among the successes cited Monday by Vernon Hills Mayor Roger Byrne in his State of the Village address.

The village approved a $20 million economic incentive for the project.

The village has a reserve of nearly $24 million and for several years has maintained AAA credit ratings while funding police pensions at 82 percent, among the highest levels in Illinois.

Because it doesn't impose a property tax, the village needs sales taxes to fund its operations and other projects, Byrne said.

A $955,000 sales tax rebate to lure Mariano's food store, Byrne said, was paid off eight years earlier than projected, resulting in a bump in sales tax revenue to the village.

Retooled York Building taking shape in downtown Elmhurst

Doug T. Graham

The York Building, a new office and retail structure beginning to take shape in downtown Elmhurst, is scheduled to open in late summer with a different vibe than developers first envisioned.

The three-story brick building at 128 N. York Road originally was expected to house stores, office space and apartments -- and the city council approved those plans last year with an eye toward a late 2016 opening.

Acquisitions, said the plans changed in late fall when developers identified a growing need for good-sized office space and a declining need for residential development.
