The late 1700s are not very different from the late 1900s and early 21st century. Two common factors are greed and Capitalism, more accurately corporatism.  These two features together with economic forces shaped the growth of the slave trade and made it too big to fail. Like todays Big Bankers the top slave traders made fortunes and became celebrities on the back of forgotten human misery
