No, I wasn't Linkedin's lover - and Linkedin wasn't mine. But, when someone asked me whether I'd started having withdrawal symptoms from not going to Linkedin.com for the past couple of days, it reminded me of this wonderful little book called "How To Survive The Loss Of A Love" (by Peter McWilliams, Harold H. Bloomfield, and Melba Colgrove http://www.amazon.com/Survive-Loss-Love-Peter-McWilliams/dp/0931580439):
Here's an excerpt to see if you can relate:

This decision to offer one of the most widely used advertising tools at a deep discount is really an experiment for me. I believe in the price schematics of designers, I fall somewhere in the middle with the extremes being extremely inexpensive and very expensive. I've noticed that while the need for this particular service is at a high, the budgets of many people establishing/running small businesses are tight right now. So, the experiment is whether or not I will have more orders for banners… Continue

There are many factors which can affect the way we choose to solve problems. Continue
There are many factors which can unexpectedly enter our lives and alter the shape of our beliefs about certain things.
There are many factors which contribute to how we use our time and the things we choose to pursue with our time.
There are many factors which affect our plans - no matter how carefully constructed the plans are.
And, of course, there are many factors which…

A client of mine feels like he always comes in second in interviews. He does well, but he wants to do more than just do well. He wants to Ace the interview.
So how do you Ace the interview? How do you communicate that you're the top person for the job?
I'll be publishing interview tips in an "Acing the Interview" series.
First – What do you wear in an interview?
The old paradigm was to overdress for the interview. Translation: Suit. But that's not the right… Continue

Maybe for once, be one of those with enough foresight to see an opportunity in the making. From "Why Keep Strong!
I open this new iteration of my blog with this simple, straightforward question: "Why would Linkedin Corporation take down a motivational networking group?"
The group was called "Keep STRONG!"
To help you understand the character of the group which Linkedin suspended, here is its original description:
"It is NOT your job to help those who seek to drag you down, to weaken you.… Continue

Can you do a brief mental experiment with me, please?
Take just a moment on this: Try to visualize going through the course of your networking year WITHOUT having to encourage someone in your network or without someone in your network having to encourage you.
Just imagine that for a moment. Just imagine a networking year without the concept of encouragement entering into it.
If you have a large network of, let’s say, 500+ people, I think it would be virtually… Continue

The Television has been a widely used telecommunication medium for broadcasting. The word television is derived from mixed Latin and Greek roots, meaning “far sight”: Greek tele (????), far, and Latin vision, sight (from video, vis- to see, or to view in the first person).
Commercially available since the late 1930s, the television set has become a common household communications device in homes and institutions, particularly as a source of entertainment and news. From the… Continue

One of LinkedIN’s more powerful features for job seekers is their recommendations feature.
LinkedIN allows users to ask for recommendations from past managers, co workers, business partners and service providers. Some on LinkedIN have collected hundreds, others don’t use this at all.
As a job seeker, LinkedIN Recommendations can be a way to highlight your accomplishments and Subject Matter Expertise. Better yet, it’s done publicly, and on a website that is VERY searchable… Continue

That's how long the average reviewer spends on your resume, before making an interview/no interview decision. That's IF
your resume gets beyond a database search.
To put it in perspective, think about what you can do in 15 seconds: Brush your teeth, kiss your significant other, uncork a bottle of wine, pour a beer, load the washing machine, pour coffee, tie your shoes, put on your shirt, tie your tie, or watch Monty Python's Slapping Fish… Continue

Which do you think is more effective: 1) Sending 100 resumes for many jobs in the hope that a few will be interested in you? or 2) Send a few resumes to a few jobs that you are a perfect fit for?
While this strategy is counterintuitive, sending fewer resumes is a much more effective method. An effective and customized resume can get a 25-50% "hit ratio" (phone screens or interviews divided by total resumes sent) using a send fewer strategy.
Why does this… Continue
