Fostering Curiosity & Managing ADHD in the Classroom

I have been meditating for twenty five years. It is a daily ritual as important to me as sleeping and eating the right food. One metaphor to describe meditation is to imagine you are looking at your thoughts as if they are clouds drifting across the sky. These thoughts may be troubling or pleasant. When you let something that is troubling you be like a cloud in the sky—neither good nor bad—you allow yourself to become free from the intense emotions surrounding these problems.  In the…See More

The Shadow

The match sparks against its box.Engulfing oxygen, igniting with a roarThat would deafen those with smaller earsLight and shadow are born. I can see. Shadows are dancing around, morphing into demonsWith unpredictable delight in the primordial light, this night. In its dying moments the match passes its light onto the candle.A new light is born. But the shadows remain.             They beckon me with their…See More

Lawrence Carroll commented on Vincent Wright's group Education
"It's good to reflect that the great written works were often summaries and footnotes of dynamic oral traditions. The written works could never transmit the "moment" of knowledge being imparted. And a big YES to practice. Practice was…"

"Haunting thoughts. The body is constantly in dialogue with you and seeks your attention. I wrote about how the mind and the body are a team to align you into your potential fitness (cf The Mind Body Connection). Stay strong!"

Profile Information

About Me:
Lawrence Carroll: Educational Consultant, Teacher, and Certified Life Coach

The methodologies I'm offering were created in the crucible of the high school classroom, teaching Mathematics for seventeen years in Australia and the USA, most recently at Taconic High in Pittsfield. Since 2009, I have been sharing my ideas and strategies with colleagues, administrators, and new and experienced teachers at High, Middle and Elementary School levels (please see testimonials

With the introduction of new standards and national educational incentives, such as "Race to the Top," I see teachers, students and parents struggling with even greater challenges and demands. My work addresses this directly, allowing teachers to improve classroom management, students to manage stress, and improve attention and focus in the classroom. For this reason, I was nominated for the "Distinctive Educator of the Berkshires" Award in 2011 and presented a paper on my work at the Oxford (England) Round Table in August 2013. Educators and academics from eight countries and five states of the US acknowledged the presentation as relevant and timely work. (For more information contact me below).

As an Educational Consultant and Workshop Leader, I offer professional development sessions, one-on-one coaching and in-class modeling. Information on other workshops can be found on my website –

Is my work applicable beyond teaching and the classroom? It absolutely is! The ground of my work is to help individuals, in collective situations, to manage stress in order to create safety in the group and improve progress for all individuals. Creating psychological and emotional safety is paramount to success no matter what field we are in!

I look forward to speaking with you, and possibly working together to enhance the experience of those in your life and work.

Thank you very much for your interest.

Stay inspired.

Silence: Bringing Unity to Schools

Posted on November 10, 2013 at 9:57pm 0 Comments

The ground of my pedagogical approach lies in silence and reflection. Silence and reflection slow down the thinking process. 'Thinking' takes time: thinking through time is punctuated by moments of generative silence and imagination. When thinking slows, awareness of our perceptual and cognitive experience (metacognition) emerges. This is foundational to critical thinking, inquiry…

Looking in Both Directions

Looking in Both Directions

Sometimes when you start working out, losing weight, changing diets or in some way trying to improve your life you get overwhelmed or disillusioned.

Why is this?

One reason can be the habit of only looking forward toward your goals - the horizon.  Believe me the horizon never stands still. It moves away as you move towards it. Horizon gazing can be a miserable experience if you hope it gets closer the more you move toward…
