I was thinking about how best to add value here at Brandergy:Executives and my first inclination is to start posting tidbits of value in order to encourage members to chime in and start a dialogue.
My first post then will be about AUTHENTICITY. Over the course of my career in companies large and small, I have observed that it was considered prudent to invest time early on to understand the "culture" of the organization. What I found was that such understanding often expressed itself in trying to adapt oneself and one's style to the general vibe of the place.
Over the 3 decades of my career, however, I have seen the downside of such adaptation in the form of facade building and wearing a mask that expresses "I'm in the group" at the expense of what is the genuine person.
I recently saw an internal memo from a major US firm that described the culture there as so passive-aggressive, no self-limiting that no one dared to speak truth or make any comment that wasn't completely "supportive" for fear of alienating entrenched political bonds and appearing to be "not a team player."
The memo was sent to me on the person's non-work email and they implored me to never mention their name.
